Abstract

2-Ethoxymethyl glutaronitrile may be used as a lubricant additive.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1097360/C2/1> where Z is -OR, -NR1R11, halogen, -SR1 or -N(R1)-CO-R11, where R is alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aryl containing 1 to 20 carbons and R1 and R11 are hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl or aryl containing 1 to 20 carbon atoms. The invention also comprises a process for preparing an organic compound by reacting 2-methylene glutaronitrile with a compound containing at least one active hydrogen atom. The reaction may be effected at 0-100 DEG C. in a solvent, e.g. water, dioxan, t-butanol or tetrahydrofuran, at ambient or autogenous pressures up to 20 atmospheres and a cyanoalkylation catalyst, e.g. metallic sodium, sodium methylate, hydroxide or ethoxide, potassium hydroxide or a quaternary nitrogen base, may be present in an amount, e.g. of 0.01 to 1% by wt. based on the nitrile. In the examples, 2-methylene glutaronitrile is reacted with ethanol, allyl alcohol, ethylene glycol, ammonia, dimethylamine, hydrogen chloride and hydrogen bromide.
