Abstract
Compounds of the general formula <FORM:0609455/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 and R2 are the same or different and represent hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms or an alkoxy radical containing 1 or 2 carbon atoms, R3 and R4 are the same or different alkyl radicals containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms inclusive or may form part of a saturated heterocyclic ring such as piperidine, a methyl substituted piperidine, morpholine, a methyl substituted morpholine or thiomorpholine, R5 is an alkyl radical of 1 to 5 carbon atoms inclusive or an aralkyl radical and X is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, are obtained by reacting a b -haloethyl benzhydryl ether with the corresponding tertiary amine. Preferably, the reaction is carried out in an inert organic solvent such as ether, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, xylene, methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, n-propanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, acetonitrile and nitromethane. Examples give details of the preparation of (1) b -benzhydryloxyethyl trimethylammonium bromide; (2) b -benzhydryloxyethyl diethyl - n - butylammonium bromide; (3) 1 -(b - benzhydryloxyethyl) - 1 - methylpiperidinium iodide; (4) 4-(b -benzhydryloxyethyl)-4-methylmorpholinium bromide; (5) b - 4,41-dimethylbenzhydryloxyethyl di - n - propyl - isopropylammonium bromide; (6) b -2-methoxybenzhydryloxyethyl methylethylbenzylammonium bromide. b -Halogenethyl benzhydryl ethers.-b -Bromoethyl benzhydryl ether is obtained by heating together benzhydryl bromide, anhydrous sodium carbonate and ethylene bromohydrin. The other starting materials may be made in an analogous manner.
