Abstract

Textile materials consisting wholly or partly of linear fibre-forming polyesters, such as polyethylene terephthalate, cellulose acetate or cellulose triacetate, are dyed or printed with disperse or vat dyestuffs, the dyebath or printing paste containing, as an accelerator, a colourless, preferably water-soluble, compound of the formula: <FORM:0875055/IV(c)/1> in which R represents an alkylene radical with a linear or branched chain of 1 to 3 carbon atoms, X a hydrogen atom or the radical -R-CN (in which R has the above meaning), and Y a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the acyl radical of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a radical of the formula:- <FORM:0875055/IV(c)/2> in which X and R have the above meanings and n is zero or 1. Specified compounds are 2-aminoproprionitrile, 3-aminobutyronitrile, 2-methylaminopropionitrile, N-(2-cyanoethyl)- N-ethylamine, N-methyl- N, N- bis-(2-cyanoethyl)-amine, N, N-bis-(2-cyanoethyl)-amine, N, N-bis-(3-cyanopropyl)-amine, 2-formylaminopropionitrile, 3-formylaminobutyronitrile, 3-butyrylaminobutyronitrile, 2-butyrylaminopropionitrile, N, N-bis-(2-cyanoethyl)-formamide, N, N, N1, N1-tetrabis-(2-cyanoethyl)-oxalic acid diamide and N, N, N1, N1-tetrabis-(2-cyanoethyl)-malonic acid diamide. Fixation of the dyestuffs may be effected by dyeing under pressure, steaming under pressure or, in the case of polyethylene terephthalate fibres, by treatment with hot air, the latter process enabling vat dyestuffs to be fixed in their reduced or oxidized form. Examples are given.
