Class 40(3) [Also in Groups XIX and XXX] A photo-electric sensing device for sensing the passage of railway vehicle axles for counting comprises a light unit L and photocell unit P and is associated with a circuit which produces a pulse in response to the passage of an axle. Light from a lamp A mounted at one focus of an elliptic reflector r is formed into a parallel beam by a bi-concave lens l, the beam then being reflected from a prism p formed at the end of a rod t of transparent material to pass along the rod whence the beam traverses the top of a rail, or passed through a slot in the rail, to be focused by a lens formed in the end of a second transparent rod w on a photo-sensitive device comprising a selenium photocell n, Fig. 1, adapted when illuminated to bias to cut off a transistor k. When the light beam is interrupted by the passage of wheel of vehicle, the transistor k onducts to energize a high speed relay APE which supplies a pulse to be counted. The photocell may be a photo-transistor or selenium photo-cell.
