Abstract

PURPOSE:To easily read a postal code of a label on postal matter by detecting a label area having light reflection characteristics differing from the surface of the postal matter and by setting a read visual field on the basis of the detection signal. CONSTITUTION:An image pickup device 161 at a read part 11 sends a signal, obtained by reading carried postal matter P through utilizing irregular reflection from its surface, to a label detecting circuit, and a circuit 19 quantitizes the signal to detect a label 3. A read part 12, on the other hand, is provided in front of the read part 11 and reads and scans the carried postal matter P optically to generate an electric signal. On the basis of the output signal of the circuit 19, a signal processing circuit 20 generates a mask signal corresponding to the area, and the output signal of the read part 12 is controlled with the mask signal to extract only the postal code of the label 3, which is supplied to a character recognition part 21. Consequently, the postal code of the label on the postal matter P is read easily.
