Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable to read in the character information surely, by providing the side detector, luster area detector and character detector, and accurately detecting the luster area only to the object to be read in having the frame shape luster area in which the character information to be read in is present. CONSTITUTION:The reader consists of the size detector 5 sequentially provided along the carrying direction (a) of the mail P being the object to be read in, luster area detector 6 and character reader 7. The size detector 6 optically detects the size of a mail P carried, e.g., width, allowing to discriminate if the main P is post card shape direct mail or any other mail. Further, the luster area detector 6 optically detects the luster area on the mail P, i.e., the address information area of a mail with a window by using the surface reflection light from the cellophase paper. Further, the character reader 7 optically reads in the address post number present in the address information area of the window mail, based on each output signal of the size detector 5 and the luster area detector 6.
