Abstract
874,528. Electric heating tapes. TEMPLETON COAL CO. Inc. Oct. 16, 1959 [April 13, 1959], No. 35030/59. Class 39(3). An elongated flexible heating tape comprises a pair of thin flat ribbon-like resistance heating elements 20, 22 individually sheathed in heat resistant electrical insulating material 24, 26 arranged in a side-by-side coextensive relation and interconnected at 36 at one end 34 to from a unitary member, the free ends of the two ribbons having individual terminals for connection with a source of electrical energy. The sheathed elements are maintained in fixed spatial relationship with each other and are arranged with a length of cord 30 whch acts as a spacer between them, the ribbons and cord being adhered to a strip of flexible material 32 made of quartz, asbestos or glass fibre. Before adhesion to the tape 32 the sheathed ribbons and cord may be enveloped together under a coating 28, Fig. 3, of silicone rubber or similar material. Rubber end pieces 48 may be attached to the ends of the tape to which is connected leads or support wires 52, the latter being knotted at each end so that if it is desired to heat a drum or the like the tape may be helically wound round its circumference and its upper end held in place by magnetic clamping members the sectoral of the wire 52 below knot 58. The heating tape may attain temperatures of up to 2000‹C., in which case the coating 28 is not applied, otherwise the maximum temperature attained should not exceed 500‹C. Individual yarns or threads reinforced by fine wire metal alloys or other synthetic fibres may be used in place of the glass fibre, asbestos and quartz referred to.
