Abstract

873,852. Switching arrangements. PFAFF A.G., G. M. Aug. 29, 1958 [Aug. 31, 1957], No. 27764/58. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group VII] In order to lock the stitches at the beginning or end of a seam, a sewing machine is reversed after a predetermined number of forward stitches and then again driven forwards after making the same number of backward stitches. A cam on the driving shaft of the machine (not shown) closes a contact 10 every time a stitch is made and this energizes the coil D of a 10-position stepping switch having 3 banks of contacts e.g. 3d0, 4d0, 5d0. The main bank 3d0 &c. can energize the reversing solenoid B of the machine through manual selector switches 1c . . . 5c any one of which can determine the number of switch steps, i.e. the number of forward stitches, preceding the reversal, and also because of their increasing number of contacts, the number of switch steps, i.e. the number of backward stitches, before the stepping switch is clear of the selected contacts and the solenoid B is released to allow the machine to return to forward stitching. After a total of 10 stitches a relay A is energized over contact 5d10 to open contact 1a and disable the system. The stepping switch is homed on to contacts 3d0 &c. by closing a switch 22 at the end of the sewing operation. To lock the stitches at the end of a seam instead of the beginning, a switch 12 is maintained open by an undisclosed counter or timer until the selected number of stitches from the end, when the system operates as above.
