Abstract
L-Glutamic acid is prepared by cultivating a strain of Brevibacterium lactofermentus nov. sp. under aerobic conditions and in the presence of an assimilable carbon source and an assimilable nitrogen source. Carbon sources are preferably glucose, fructose, sucrose, maltose, lactose or a hydrolysate of starch. Nitrogen sources are preferably ammonium sulphate, urea or ammonia, the latter being used to maintain a pH of from 7.4 to 8.3 automatically by means of a pH electrode control. Temperatures preferably range from 28 DEG to 37 DEG C. during fermentation. High yields are obtained by addition of Vitamin B1 (thiamine), thiamine propyl disulphite or dibenzoyl thiamine to the fermentation broth. Specified strains of Brevibacterium lactofermentus are A.T.C.C. 13655 and 13869.
