Abstract

A moulding composition comprises a mixture of (1) a thermoplastic resin, (2) 5%-50% by weight of an oriented synthetic fibrous material with a fibre length in the range from 1/100 inch to 4 inches and (3) from 0%-20% of glass fibre. The thermoplastic resins may be polyvinyl chloride and plasticized polyvinyl chloride, esters of polyacrylic and polymethacrylic acids, polyethylene, polyoxymethylene, polystyrene, styrene-butadiene and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers and plasticized polyvinyl acetate, ethyl cellulose, and plasticized cellulose propionate. The fibrous material may be formed from polyamides, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, polyethylene terephthalate polypiperazine terephthalimide and poly-2, 5-dimethylpiperazine terephthalimide, polyesters, polysulphonamides, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinylidene chloride. The compositions may be formed by milling under high shear conditions, or by treating the filaments, e.g. as a skein, with a solution or dispersion of the thermoplast, and drying, pressing and cutting; they are used for injection moulding.
