Abstract

A process for the production of filter elements comprises forming a bundle of unplasticized filaments or fibres, condensing the bundle into a cylindrical shape and applying around the formed cylindrical element a wrapper which is bonded to the outer layer of the bundle of filaments or fibres. The filter elements may be made from crimped continuous filament material e.g. cellulose acetate, polyethylene, polyesters, polyamides and acrylonitrile polymers, or blends of polymeric material with viscose, regenerated proteins or cotton. The wrapper may be made of paper, cellulose acetate or polymeric material and may be coated with a plasticizer for the material of the filaments or fibres, excess plasticiser being added at the join of the wrapper. Where the wrapper is a polymeric material the join may be made by applying a solvent for that polymeric material, e.g. an acetone solvent may be applied in the case of a wrapper of cellulose acetate film.
