Abstract
795,112. Tobacco-smoke filters. AMERICAN VISCOSE CORPORATION. Feb. 10, 1955 [Feb. 23, 1954], No. 3996/55. Class 130. A mass containing thermoplastic organic fibres, Fig. 2, carrying an electric charge is formed into a filter, whose shape is fixed by bonding together a substantial number of the fibres at their points of contact. The fibres may be formed into a web 14, Fig. 4, folded, rolled or twisted to form a cylindrical mass 15 in a die 16 electrically heated to cause fusion of at least the surface fibres, the mass 15 being subsequently subdivided into individual filters. Alternatively the web may be simply rolled into a cylinder, and subjected to heat or have applied thereto a surface binder such as a solution of a resin, cellulose derivative, glue, gelatine, casein or water-soluble cellulose ether, being again subsequently sub-divided. A loose mass of the fibres may be enclosed in a cylindrical tube of paper, metal foil or regenerated cellulose and heated to bond the surface fibres to each other and to the tube, the resulting unit being usable in cigar or cigarette holders or pipe-stems, or in cigarettes, when the tube may be the cigarette paper itself or a sleeve insertable in one end thereof. Cigarettes may also have preformed filter masses inserted in one end thereof and bonded to the cigarette paper by a second heat treatment. The fibres vary in maximum diameter among themselves from 0.25 to 10 microns and have tapering ends to give more than a twofold variation in diameter along their lengths, and are formed with substantially permanent positive or negative charges by spraying in a charged field from a solution or molten mass of natural or synthetic resins, e.g. vinyl resins, acrylic resins, polyamide resins or polyethylene resins, of cellulose derivatives, e.g. cellulose esters, cellulose ethers, cellulose ester-ethers, or of compatible mixtures of resins and cellulose derivatives. The fibres form electrets and may have mixed therewith non-electret fibres derived from wood, straw, sisal or hemp, from regenerated cellulose formed by extrusion of viscose, cuprammonia or dissolved cellulose, from gelatine, casein, zein or peanut proteins, from asbestos, glass or rock wool or from mixtures thereof.
