Abstract

Encapsulated particles, used in the manufacture of tobacco smoke filters, are produced by the graft polymerization of ethylene on to a substrate of finely divided cellulose particles while slurried in an organic liquid containing also an organo metallic/transition metal catalyst.ALSO:Tobacco smoke filters are made by applying finely divided particles of cellulose encapsulated in a heat softenable polymeric material to a band of filamentary material, compacting the material containing the particles into a rod-like form and heating this material before or after said compacting to soften the polymeric material so that the encapsulated particles become bonded to the filamentary material, and wrapping the rods so formed. In the examples the cellulose particles are encapsulated by graft polymerizing ethylene thereon. The encapsulated particles are applied to an opened tow of crimped continuous cellulose acetate filaments by means of an agitated sieve or a fluidized bed. Other tows specified comprise other cellulose esters, regenerated cellulose, polyamide and polyester filaments.
