873,101. Printing surfaces. FAUGLI, P. R., FAUGLI, I. O., and HEGSVOLD, O., [trading as FAUGLI & HEGSVOLD]. Nov. 20, 1959 [Nov. 27, 1958], No. 39492/59. Class 100(2) Apparatus for controlling a tool for cutting down parts of the surface of a cylindrical stereotype printing plate includes a drum of non- magnetic material rotatably mounted parallel to the axis of rotation of two or more plates mounted on a rotatable cylinder, the drum being at least as long as the plates and covered with a layer of magnetic material, means movable over the magnetic material to magnetise parts of it corresponding to the raised parts of the plate surface and a scanning head movable over the drum synchronously with the axial movement of the tool and, when passing the magnetised parts, energising an electromagnet to move the tool to an inoperative position. The drum 9 is helically wound with magnetic tape and the magnetising means 15 is controlled by sensing arms 13 which are manually moved against parts of the plate not to be cut down. The scanning head 12 controls an electromagnet 8 which controls the cutting tool 4 rotated by a motor 5 and moved axially by a lead screw 7. A permanent magnet 17 erases the magnetic pattern after use.
