Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXII] A method of cutting down the surfaces of cylindrical stereotype printing plates, leaving part of the plate surface raised above the remaining parts comprises attaching at least two similar printing plates to a rotatable drum, applying to corresponding parts of the plate surfaces which are not to be cut down a layer which during the rotation of the drum is scanned by means which control the movement of a cutting tool into and out of the operating position, and rotating the drum and scanning the surfaces of the plates, whereby when the layer on one plate is scanned, the corresponding part of the other plate is not cut down. Two semi-cylindrical stereotype printing plates having parts of their surfaces not to be cut away covered with electrically insulating layers C are secured to a rotatable drum, which is scanned helically by a finger D. When the finger passes over the layers C, an electromagnet E is deenergised and retracts the rotary cutting tool G, which is driven by a motor H, from the plate. Alternatively, the scanning means may be a feeler sensing a layer C of substantial thickness and operating mechanically, a light source and photoelectric cell sensing a layer C having different light-reflecting properties from those of the plate surface, or a magnetic scanning head, the layer C being of magnetic material.
