Abstract

[Also in Division B6] A device for regularly applying a graphite mark to a surface includes electromagnetic means variously controllable to bring a marker wheel into contact with the surface by means of a spring, to increase the pressure of the marker wheel on the surface by further stressing the spring and to actuate means for making the mark on the surface. Fig. 2 illustrates a form of the invention in which a graphite marker wheel 11 applies a marking to a photographic layer support web 3. To the apparatus frame 1 of a printing machine for use with lightsensitive material is attached a bracket arm 4 on which the armature 6 of a rotary electromagnet 5 is held; the armature 6 is attached to a lever 7 which carries a bearing for a drive pawl 9. An arm 10 carrying a graphite wheel 11 is rotatably supported on the bracket arm 4; a ratchet wheel 13 is fixed to graphite wheel 11 on spindle 12 and co-operates with the pawl 9. A compression spring 15 is wound round a screw 14 attached to the arm 10 and bearing on a projection 7a on the lever 7. When the electromagnet 5 is energized by a switching circuit (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) pressure is exerted on spring 15 by lever 7 and the arm 10 pivots downwards against the force of weak hairpin spring 16 until the wheel 11 meets layer support 3; the magnet is then provided with further current, the spring 15 becomes further compressed, and wheel 11 exerts greater pressures at the same time, by means of pawl 9, the ratchet wheel 13 rotates the graphite wheel 11 to provide a sharp rectangular mark on the layer support 3. The magnet is then de-energized, and spring 16 returns arm 10 to its original position (Fig. 1, not shown). The electromagnet may be controlled by a switch circuit which includes a series resistor which can be bridged by a further switch to increase the current flowing through the magnet (Fig. 3, not shown), or the bridging can be carried out by an electrical trim circuit which is energized only when the wheel 11 impinges on surface 3 (Fig. 4, not shown).
