Abstract

Basic aluminium chloride and nitrate are prepared by heating the hydrated chloride or nitrate at 150-170 DEG C. until a loss of 58 to 60% of the initial weight has occurred. The product in each case is a white powder insoluble in cold water but which will hydrate in boiling water and thereby dissolve. The basic chlorides or nitrates obtained are employed as an anti-perspirant in association with a carrier.ALSO:An anti-perspirant contains a basic aluminium nitrate or basic aluminium chloride, obtained by partial decomposition of hydrated aluminium nitrate or chloride (see Group III) in association with a carrier which may be a liquid such as water or an aqueous alcohol, a solid such as wax or a powder, or an oil-in-water or water-in-oil cream or a gel. The basic aluminium salt is preferably employed in amounts from 5-25% by weight and a non-ionic or cationic wetting agent such as an alkyl-aryl alcohol polyether, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate or cetyl - trimethylammonium chloride or bromide may be used. According to examples: (4) a liquid composition consisted of cetyl-trimethyl ammonium chloride in a 10% aqueous solution of basic aluminium chloride or nitrate; (5) powdered basic aluminium chloride or nitrate was mixed with aluminium stearate and talc; (6) basic aluminium chloride or nitrate was mixed with an aqueous solution of a polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate and the mixture added to an emulsion of stearyl alcohol and water and the composition blended to a cream.
