Abstract

872,909. Valves. MANNING, MAXWELL & MOORE Inc. Oct. 12, 1959 [Oct. 22, 1958], No. 34494/59. Class 135. A spring-loaded pop-action safety valve of the kind wherein a valve head 14 is lifted from a seat in response to the accumulation of pressure beneath the valve head, the valve having a body 10 provided with a discharge passage D, and an inlet nozzle tube 12 whose upper edge forms the valve seat, a rigid fixed guide 20 within the body whose lower end is spaced above the plane of the valve seat, a rigid valve holder 22a comprising an elongated stem which is coaxial with the valve seat and which has sliding engagement with the fixed guide, the valve head or disc 14 being so connected to the holder 22a as to permit the head to rock relatively thereto, and an adjustable blow-down ring 38 having screw-threaded engagement with the nozzle tube, the holder having a screw-threaded peripheral portion 31 of a diameter approximating the external diameter of the inlet nozzle, is characterized in having an annular skirt 32 which has screw-threaded engagement with the portion 31 of the holder so that the skirt may be adjusted axially relatively to the holder, the skirt having a horizontal, flat annular face 34 which constitutes the roof of a huddling chamber, said roof being always accurately parallel to the plane of the valve seat, and co-operating elements such as a fixed pin 37 co-operating with radial slots 36 in the skirt to retain the skirt in a selected position of adjustment, when the valve is seated, at which the roof of the huddling chamis at one or another predetermined distance H above the plane of the valve seat.
