Abstract
Leather, skins and/or animal fibres attached thereto are dyed by contact with an organic compound which is at most sparingly soluble in water at the temperature of dyeing and with an aqueous solution or dispersion of a coloured substance, the solubility of the coloured substance in the organic compound at the temperature of dyeing being greater than its solubility in water. Coloured substance is defined, as a dyestuff, lake or a coloured organic compound insoluble in water. Specified organic compounds are n-butyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, n-hexyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, "Alphanol" (Registered Trade Mark), "Naranol," geronial, citronellol, benzyl alcohol, thymol, carvacrol, amyl lactate, dibutyl phthalate, n-butyl acetate, benzaldehyde, acridine, acetophenone and toluene. Dyestuffs which may be used in the treatment of skins and furs as above include, disperse dyes, acid wool dyes, direct dyes, premetallized dyes, organic and inorganic pigments, anionic dyes and water insoluble organo-metal complexes. If the organic compound is a liquid at ordinary temperature it may be applied directly to skin or fur. Alternatively the organic compound may be applied in the form of a solution in an organic solvent or as an emulsion in a suitable carrier, e.g. water. Dyeing may be effected in the presence of a mixture of organic compounds. When the organic compound is applied simultaneously with the dye, the skin or fur may be treated with a solution or dispersion of the dye containing the organic compound in the form of an aqueous solution or emulsion. Again, the solution or dispersion of the dye may contain the organic compound together with an organic solvent which is miscible with both the organic compound and with water. The dye may be applied to the skin or fur by spraying or brushing and subsequently the skin or fur may be immersed in a bath containing the organic compound. After the skin or fur has been subjected to dyeing treatment as described above it may be washed with an aqueous solution of dispersing agent. Examples are given. Specification 542,171 is referred to.
