[Also in Groups XXIV and XXX] A container is filled with articles such as flat cut-outs of biscuit dough, which are fed in longitudinally spaced relation along a path, by presenting the container in turn to feeding stations along the path at each of which it receives an article. Each container is thus filled with articles from different portions of the line of articles, with the result that variations in article thickness due, for example, to unevenness of the dough prior to cutting do not affect the final weight of the package. A sheet of dough 12 is fed by a conveyer 10 beneath a cylindrical cutter 18 which divides it into hexagonal discs 26 and ejects the discs on to support bars, Fig. 3 (not shown), above a series of conveyer belts 28. Projections 32 on the belts engage the articles to feed them towards the filling devices 40. The belts 28 are of progressively increasing length and each terminates adjacent a filling device. Each filling device rotates at belt speed and comprises pockets 48 for cylindrical boxes 44. Above each pocket is a suction head 49 reciprocable by cam and follower means 52, 54, 55, 56, 58, (see Group XXIV). At the first station each head transfers an article to each container, the containers being retained in the pockets 48 by a rail 53. Pressure is raised in the suction head to detach the article from it. A transfer wheel 50 and a guide rail 55a then pass the containers to the pockets of the second filling device and so on until the last belt is reached.
