Abstract

872,468. Printing surfaces. KODAK Ltd. (Kodak Pathe S.A., Kowaliski P., Sallard H., and Vareine J. H. P.). Oct. 2, 1958 [July 2 1957], No. 20846/57. Class 100(2) A process for the preparation of lithographic printing plates which comprises forming an image on a lithographic element comprising a lipophilic surface carried on a support and treating the surface with a lithographic preparation to render the non-printing areas of the surface hydrophilic is characterised in that the support is transparent or translucent and that at least a part of the image is made by tracing through the support. The translucent or transparent support is coated with a colloidal layer of a tanned hydrophilic colloidal binder containing an inert filler, a basic hydroxide of a polyvalent metal and a dispersion of a macromolecular flexibilising substance. The basic hydroxide may be cadmium hydroxide, ferrous hydroxide, or, preferably manganese hydroxide employed in an amount of 0À2%,-3À0%, by weight of the solution of hydrophilic colloid containing the inert filler. The colloidal binder may be gelatin and the inert filler Kaolin or barium sulphate. The flexibilising macromolecular substance may consist of polymers of an alkyl acrylate, sodium alginate, or a cellulose derivative such as carboxymethylcellulose or a hydroxyalkylcellulose, and constitutes 0À5%-1% by weight of the solution of hydrophilic colloid containing the inert filler. The support may be a sheet of cellulose acetate having 43À6% acetyl. In an example a composition of the formula barium sulphate 390 gms., gelatin 48 gms., water 560 gms., and manganese hydroxide 2 gms. was made and the pH value adjusted to 7À5-8À5.40 ccs. of formaldehyde (4% solution), and 75 ccs. of a 30 % aqueous dispersion of polymethyl acrylate were added and the resulting composition coated on the support and dried at 40‹C. About 40 grams of dried material are-applied per square metre of the support. The plate may be imaged by using it as a tracing paper and employing a lithographic pencil.
