Abstract
Micro- or macroscopic heat-rupturable capsules with a water-insoluble or water-immersible core have included in their walls and/or core a solid material which decomposes into a gas when heated above a given temperature and which is inert with respect to the wall and core materials. Specified materials of this type are p,p1 - oxybis - (benzenesulphonyl - hydrazide); azodicarbonamide and dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine. The disclosed techniques (in which chlorinated diphenyl is encapsulated) are: (a) the core material is dispersed in an aqueous medium containing a hydrophilic colloid, e.g. gelatin, gelatin complexes with hydrophillic colloids such as gum arabic, protein film-forming proteins, e.g. zein, synthetic film-forming substances, e.g. polymers of styrene or divinyl benzene, polyethylenemalic anhydride copolymer or its vinyl analogue which is induced to coacervate, e.g. by alteration of pH and thus form a wall around the dispersed core material which may subsequently be hardened and (b) by the method disclosed in Specification 867,797, whereby a similarly dispersed monomeric material is induced to polymerize on the surface of the dispersed core material. Multiple walled capsules including those having walls of both of the above types may also be prepared. In all cases, the gas-forming substance is introduced into the core and/or wall material and dispersed therein or therewith before formation of the capsules. Typical core materials or components specified are: evaporable solvents or fuels, e.g. toluene, xylene, kerosene and other light petroleum fractions; Vitamin A oils, essential oils, vegetable oils, volatile synthetic oils, e.g. methyl salicylate, adhesives which are naturally tacky or are made so by solvents or plasticizers, greases, hard oils, oil-based medicinal preparations, dyes, solid or in solution, e.g. Sudan III, crystal violet lactone, benzoyl-leuco-methylene blue, carbon black, magnetic iron oxide, and aspirin.
