Abstract

1423292 Microcapsular toner particles XEROX CORP 3 Jan 1973 [3 Jan 1972] 369/73 Heading B8C [Also in Division G2] Toner particles (for xerography) composed of a core material surrounded by a wall material of different solubility are prepared by mixing with an immiscible liquid a second liquid in which wall material having a blocking temperature of at least 100‹ F. is dissolved and core material is dissolved or dispersed, to give a dispersion of the said second liquid in the first liquid, and reducing in the dispersed phase the proportion of the said second liquid, thereby to effect sequential phase separation of said core material and said wall material to form an encapsulated product. Suitable core materials are oils, low molecular weight polymers (many are specified) and ester gums. Suitable wall materials are substances which are soluble in the selected solvent, e.g. synthetic resins of various types (in particular, styrene resins), gelatin, zein and gum arabic. A pigment or dye may be included in the cores and/or walls of the particles by addition thereof to the second liquid. Reduction of the proportion of the second liquid may be achieved by the application of heat or vacuum, addition of a non-solvent for the core and wall materials or by freezing and freeze-drying. Generally, the said second liquid is a mixture from which one component (usually the most volatile) is removed.
