Abstract

872,386. Stopping; valve gears. NORTH EASTERN MARINE ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1958 [Feb. 20, 1957], No. 5754/57. Classes 7(5) and 7(6). In an internal-combustion engine comprising one or more cylinders, each provided with a vent and means for controlling the opening and closing of the vent, the control means includes a movable valve member which has two positions of operation in which the control means are arranged to hold the vent or vents open to atmosphere when the movable member is in one position and to open and close the vent or vents in timed sequence when the movable valve member is in the other position of operation, the arrangement being such that when the movable member is in the last mentioned position of operation the vent of each cylinder is closed during at least part of the compression stroke of its associated piston and is opened at or near the end of the compression stroke so as to increase the resistance to the turning of the engine shaft. The invention is applicable to stopping large marine engines and compression ignition engines. When it is desired to stop the engine the fuel control operating lever 48 is moved to a central position. As a result, air or hydraulic fluid is admitted through the pipe 40 to the top of the distributer shuttle 56 and flows therefrom through the pipes 36 to all the cylinder relief valves 14. The relief valves are thereby held open so as to brake the engine. The engine speed falls to about 20 r.p.m. whereupon the operating lever 48 is moved to the left as viewed in Fig. 3. Air or hydraulic fluid is then supplied to the bottom end of the distributer shuttle 56 so as to cause it to move upwards to the position shown in Fig. 3. Then air or hydraulic fluid is supplied to the relief valves 14 in timed sequence. Each cylinder relief valve 14 is closed during the compression stroke and is open during the first 90 degrees of the expansion stroke. The engine cylinders each comprise opposed pistons 10, 12. The distributer 38 is conveniently driven off the engine cam shaft 50. Relief valves in accordance with Specification 745,714 (referred to) are suitable for the purpose of the invention. Specification 789,544 also is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
