Abstract

872,266. Idler roller assemblies for endless-belt conveyers. MINING ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. July 30, 1959 [Sept. 27, 1958], No. 30952/58. Class 78 (1). A troughing idler roller assembly for an endless belt conveyer comprises a plurality of rollers rotatably mounted on rigid individual spindles of which the adjacent ends are hingedly connected, the spindles of the outermost rollers being pivotally connected to either rigid stationary supports or longitudinal flexible stringers by means of a spring or springs to allow the troughing angle to increase with load. The centre roller 10, Fig. 1, of an idler roller assembly is mounted on ball-bearings 12 on a rigid spindle 13 which is pivoted by means of links 14 to tubular spindles 15 supporting rollers 11 on ball-bearings 16. Cylindrical bars 17, the outer end 23 of each of which is curved for engagement with a support about which it can move angularly, are slidably mounted in the outer ends of the spindles 15, the bars 17 being provided with pins 21 which engage in slots 22 in the spindles 15 and which are urged against the inner ends of the slots by means of springs 18 abutting the pins 21 and collars 19 secured to the spindles. An additional stronger spring may be provided between each spindle 15 and bar 17 to be effective over the last part of the yielding movement of the assembly to absorb excessive shocks. The sliding joint between the bar 17 and the outer end of the spindle 15 may be provided with sealing bellows 24. The rollers may each comprise a steel shell carried by end rings, in which case the spring may be formed by Belleville washers mounted on a bar slidable through the outer end ring. In a further embodiment, Fig. 7, the outer end of the spindle 36 of each outer roller 35 extends beyond the roller and is received in a tapered metal sleeve 37 bonded to a frusto-conical rubber bush 38 which is bonded to an internallytapered housing 39 having trunnions 41 received in bearings on the rigid support 42, 43. The sleeve 37 is clamped between a shoulder on the spindle 36 and a disc 44 secured on the spindle by means of a nut 45. Initially, the bush is operating in shear and the resistance to movement of the spindle is relatively small, but, as the troughing angle is increased, the bush is compressed between the sleeve 37 and housing 39 and the resistance increases progressively.
