Abstract

A catalytic reformate is separated into a lower- and a higher-boiling fraction, and the latter is contacted at 840-1075 DEG F. with a dehydrogenation and dehydrocyclisation catalyst and recombined with the lower-boiling reformate fraction which may also have been contacted at 840-1075 DEG F. with a dehydrogenation and dehydrocyclisation catalyst. A heavy naphtha having an I.B.P. of 70-100 DEG C. and a F.B.P. of 150-200 DEG C. is reformed over a catalyst containing 0.1-10% platinum and 0.1-8% fluorine and/or chlorine on alumina at 600-1200 DEG F., 50-1000 p.s.i., 0.5-10 vol./vol./hr. in the presence of 0.5-15 mols of hydrogen per mol of hydrocarbon. The product is separated with a cut point in the range 80-130 DEG C. and the higher-boiling fraction contacted with a chromia-alumina catalyst containing 5-25% of chromia and a smaller quantity of promoters in the range 0.1-10%, which may be rare earths, bismuth, boron, germanium, nickel, manganese, iron or beryllium in combination with an alkali metal or a spinel. Suitable conditions are up to 50 p.s.i.g. and 0.1-1 vol./vol./hr. in the absence of hydrogen. If desired the lower-boiling fraction is similarly treated. The product preferably has a volatility of 40-60% volume recovered at 100 DEG C. and an octane number (research clear) of at least 90.
