Abstract
The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0871490/IV (b)/1> wherein X represents hydrogen or halogen, Y represents hydrogen or methyl, Z represents a b -hydroxymethylene or keto group, W represents the group -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH- and Me represents the cation of a physiologically acceptable inorganic or organic base, and in the case where Z represents the hydroxymethylene group X and Y are not both hydrogen, and the preparation thereof by reacting the required 21-hydroxy compound with a reagent from the corresponding 21-hemisulphate e.g. by reacting with sulphur trioxide-pyridine adducts, and converting the 21- hemisulphate into a salt with a physiologically acceptable inorganic or organic base. It is possible to first form a pyridine salt by the above method, treat the pyridine salt with triethyl-amine to form the triethyl-ammonium salt and then treat this with sodium hydroxide to form the sodium salt. In the examples the sodium and triethyl-ammonium salts of 9a -fluoro-16a -methyl-prednisolone 21-hemisulphate, and the pyridinium, sodium and triethylammonium salt of prednisone 21-hemisulphate and of 9a -fluoro-hydrocortisone 21-hemisulphate are prepared.
