Abstract

871,249. Coin-freed apparatus. FISHER & LUDLOW Ltd. Jan. 13, 1959 [Oct. 14, 1957], No. 31960/57. Class 27 Mechanism for diverting undersize and ferrous coins to return shoots 35, 36 comprises a downwardly and laterally inclined runway 23 backed by a wall 19 of which the major portion 25 is bent outwardly about a line 26 below the centre of an undersized coin so that such a coin will fail to be supported by a lip 27 and will tilt and slide off the chamfered edge of the runway into the shoot 35. A plate 32 forming a passageway for the ferrous test has a bent-over edge 33, 34 so that only correct coins that have remained on the runway without tilting will pass through a narrow entry into the passageway. A correctsized coin hits a stud 37 and is deflected so that it just touches a permanent magnet 39 and, if genuine, will fall to the left of a stud 38 and to a steadying member 43 before passing to the actuating mechanism or, if counterfeit, will be sufficiently attracted by the magnet to fall to the right of the stud and thence to the chute 36. The effective strength of the magnet can be varied by adjusting the number of laminations of a non-magnetic insert fitted between it and a panel 18 and also by using a fixing screw 42 of a series of different ferrous or non-ferrous materials. A flange 22 prevents coins from bouncing as they pass the bent-out wall 25 and prevents insertion of a ruler into the mechanism through the coin slot.
