Abstract
487,866. Testing coins ; magnetic separators. BRECKNELL, MUNRO, & ROGERS (1928), Ltd., and DOLMAN, H. J. Nov. 27, 1936, No. 32478. [Class 27] [Also in Group II] A coin is led by a shoot 13, Fig. 1, to a counterweighted carrier 4 pivoted at 3, in which it lies between the poles of an electromagnet 12 energized with alternating or pulsating current. The carrier 4 is slightly off-set in relation to the magnet, so that the repulsion of the magnet due to the eddy currents induced in the coin tends to turn it anticlockwise. This is opposed by the weight of the carrier with the coin in it, the carrier lying to one side of the perpendicular through the pivot 3. The coin, on entering the carrier, releases a catch 5 normally locking the carrier, and if the coin is genuine the magnetic repulsion is sufficient to turn the carrier anticlockwise to discharge the coin into a shoot 14. If the coin is not genuine, the carrier turns under gravity in the opposite direction and discharges the coin into a second shoot 15. In the modified arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the carrier 4 is prevented from turning in the direction to release spurious coins by a stop 16. Such coins are released by the action of a lever 17 which turns the carrier in the same direction (clockwise) as in the case of genuine coins under the action of the electromagnet, but are diverted from the shoot 14 receiving genuine coins by a deflector 20 connected with the lever. The lever 17 may be actuated to discharge defective coins by operation of a push-button or-delivery drawer of the associated coin-freed apparatus, or by means of a time delay mechanism set in operation as the coin is inserted.
