Abstract

575,679. Controlling and actuating by sounds. HOVEY, C. E. April 8, 1943, No. 5641. [Class 118 (ii)] [Also in Groups XVIII and XL] Testing by ringing.-An inserted coin passes down a shoot 8 and drops on to a sloping anvil 16 rigidly mounted, and the vibrations of the coin are picked up by a microphone 12, the coin passing to a hopper 20, lined with padding to prevent stray vibrations, and onwards to a conduit 24 having two exits, one blocked by the solenoid 32 which is operated by the vibrations of a proper coin to pass it to a coin box 26, the other 28 to a shoot 30 for discharging spurious coins. A proper coin momentarily opens a contact 52 on entering the coin box in order to reset the electrical selecting circuit. The circuit contains an amplifier valve 36, a sound amplifier 38 and a relay control valve 40. The vibrations of the microphone 12 are applied to valve 36 and a band pass filter 42, of the Wein bridge type is arranged so as to have no potential at the points where it is connected to valves 36 and 38 when energy coupled back from valve 38 is of the same frequency as that to which the bridge is balanced. The output of valve 38 is fed to relay control valve 40 and a part through filter 42 to the cathodes and suppressor grid of valve 36. For a proper coin no bucking current will thus pass, but for a spurious coin the bridge output back to the valve 36 will prevent further amplification by valves 36 and 38. The amplified impulses for a proper coin reaching valve 40 cause the current therefrom to de-energize the normally energized relay 46 and thereby drop its armature to make contact 112 so that relay 48 is energized to pass current through contact 110 to cause solenoid 32 to withdraw its core 34 and free the passage for the proper coin to the coin box 26, the coin on its way opening contact 52 to break contact 110 and reset the solenoid 32 and relays 46 and 48 all of which, as shown at 114, 116 have a separate power supply.
