UNITED STATES WILLIAM: C. KLEIN, F ALLENTOVIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
FARE REGISTER.
Application filed November 22, 192%.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM G. KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fare Registers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
The present invention relates more particularly to fare boxes used in conjunction with street cars and other carriers for public service requiring the passenger to deposit a fare such as a coin or token in a box upon entering the carrier, and in accordance with the present invention such fare automatically operates a register and assumes a position for examination preliminary to dropping into an allotted receptacle.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.
While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification,
Figure 1 is a detail view of a fare box embodying the invention,
Figure 2 is a sectional view,
Figure 3 is a detail view showing the operation of the parts,
Figure 4 is a sectional view,
Figure 5 is a further detail view, and
Figure 6 shows a modified form of coin lock in which both contacts are movable.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The numeral 10 designates generally a box which contains the operating parts such as a coin actuated switch, a coin release and automatically operated register and an examina- Serial No. 751,717.
tion plate which provides for an inspection of the coin or fare to determine its nature.
The box 10 is provided with an attaching lug 11 to engage a keeper 12 upon a post 13 or other provided support. A coin chute 1 1 extends into the box and is adapted to receive a coin, token, or the like tendered in payment for fare and this coin chute is provided with circuit closing contacts 15 and 16, the contact 15 being fixed and the contact l6 movable. An electro-magnet 17 is included in the circuit which is closed by the coin or like article representing the fare. The armature 18 of the electro-magnet 17 carries the movable contact 16 and when the electro-magnet is energized by the closing of the circuit, the armature 18 is attracted and moves the contact 16 outwardly thereby releasing the coin 19 which drops into the examination chamber 20, where it is received upon a plate 21 and retained in position for inspection. A detent 22 is connected with the armature 18 and moves inwardly as the contact 16 moves outwardly, thereby engaging the next coin and arresting its forward movement until the contact 16 returns to normal position, and the detent 22 moves outwardly thereby releasing the coin which advances until arrested by the contact 16 at which time the circuit is closed by the coin electrically engaging the contacts 15 and 16 when the operation is repeated.
A fare register 23 conveniently positioned is connected with the armature 18 to be operated thereby and at each complete movement of the armature 18, the register 23 its moved to make a record of the fare deposit ed in the box and this register may be of any preferred construction and arranged in any determinate position either within the box 10 or at any point exterior thereto.
It is evident that the coin lock may embody two movable contacts, as shown in Figure 6, in which 15 and 16 designate both contacts which are connected to the armature 18 to move therewith, the other parts being substantially as indicated hereinbefore.
hat is claimed is A box having a coin chute, a vertically disposed armature adjacent said chute pivoted at one end, an electro-magnet coacting with said armature, contacts extending into the passageway f the chute adapted to be bridged by a coin to energize the electromagnet and thereby retract the armature, one of said contacts being carried by the armature and extending into the chute, :1 laterally extending arm on said armature having a detent for coin, said detent extending into the chute from the side thereof opposite to the last mentioned contact, and an operating member extending laterally from the armature.
' Intestimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
WILLIAM C. KLEIN.
