.5 ceivers adapted to be used in stores and other places to receive from the employees cash or other valuables for safe keeping or for collection.
In the larger department stores and in other .10 places where the schedule is such that a great number of employees are ready at the same time to make deposits of cash or other valuables for safe keeping or for collection, it has been customary to have a number of receiving clerks to whom these deposits are given and who write out and hand a receipt to the depositing employee. The employment of such receiving clerks entails expense, which is frequently quite large because of the number of receiving clerks that are required to handle a large number of deposits in quick succession and without entailing objectionable delay and waiting. This practice also obtains in other business establishments in which a large number of employees are frequently ready at approximately the same time to deposit collections or other matter.
A principal object of my invention is to provide a receiver in which a deposit may be made and a receipt therefor secured quickly and convenient- 3 ly, and which eliminates the necessity of having clerks to receive and receipt for deposits, and
which eliminates the attendant expense and labor.
Another object of this invention is to provide a receiver of the character described and one which is equipped with means whereby each receipt is clearly and definitely allocated to the deposit for which the receipt issued, and for safeguarding against the failure of a receipt being issued for any separate deposit.
In view of the fact that frequently a great number of depositors must be served in quick order to avoid serious confusion, delay, and annoyance, it is important that the receiver be main- ;45 tained continuously in operating condition, and,
accordingly, another object of my invention is to provide a receiver of the character described, and one in which the paper roll or other receipt supply of the receipt issuing mechanism may be .5 renewed quickly and easily and entailing only a very brief suspension of the use of the receiver, and a further object of this invention is to provide a receiver of the character described and in which the receipt issuing mechanism may be removed from and placed in the receiver quickly and easily so that, in the event it is desired to clean or adjust or repair the mechanism, it may be quickly and conveniently removed from the receiver for this purpose, or may be replaced quickly and conveniently by another unit which is in order, whereby only a very brief suspension of operation of the receiver is necessitated when such attention to the mechanism becomes necessary or is desired.
A further object of this invention is to provide a receiver of the character described which is simple, sturdy, and durable in construction, one which is simple, easy, and convenient to use, and one which effectively takes care of the deposits presented thereto.
Other objects of this invention will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In order that a clearer understanding of this invention may be had, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings, forming a H Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the red ceiver and is taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3;

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the receiver includes a chest or other suitable receptacle ID for storing deposits presented to the receiver, the chest being provided with a suitable door II. On the top of this chest is mounted a box l2 having side walls 53 and M, front wall l5, rear wall [6, which is higher than the front wall, and has an interior vertical partition 11 extending between the side walls whereby there is established between rear wall it and partition I! a chute space i8 open at the bottom and there registering with a corresponding opening l9 provided in the top 26 of chest Hi. There is thus also established between the front wall l of box I2 and partition ll a compartment 2| adapted to house receipt issuing mechanism and other mechanical and electrical elements of the receiver. Compartment 2! is closed at the top by a plate 22 which extends from the wall l5 to the partition 11.
At the top of chute 18 there is a. top plate 23 and immediately under this plate is positioned a drawer 24, having rollers 25 resting on cleats or tracks 26 secured to the side walls I 3 and M of boX l2 and whereby the drawer is supported so that it may be pulled out from under the top plate 23 and over the top plate 22 of compartment 2| to allow a deposit to be placed therein. Spring means, which maytake the form of spring tensioned reels 2'| of tapes 28, having the reels rotatably mounted on the opposite side walls l3 and 4 and having the ends of the tapes 28 attached to pins 29 or the like secured to the sides of the drawer, may be provided to automatically quickly close the drawer after it has been opened and then released. Drawer 24 has a bottom 39 which at its forward edge is hinged to the front wall 3| as by means of hinges 32. When the drawer is pulled open, the bottom 39 engages the top of partition l1 and is raised and held up thereby, and, when the drawer is closed, bottom- 39 drops and anything that may have been placed in the drawer drops through chute l8 and the aperture l9 in the top of chest I9 and comes to rest in the chest. Within compartment 2| is housed a supporting standard or frame comprising a bottom plate 33 on which is. formed or mounted a vertical plate 34, and on this pedestal or frame is carried the receipt issuing mechanism and certain of the controls therefor. One of the side walls, such as I3, is provided with a suitable opening through which this. pedestal or frame, with all its parts intact thereon, may be removed easily and conveniently. A door 35, hinged as at 36 to the wall I 3, is provided for closing this opening. The receipt issuing mechanism may be any one of a number that are available on the market, and therefore such mechanism is not shown in great detail in the drawings. There is shown, however, the driving motor 3'! connected by suitable gearing 39 to the earn-ratchet wheel 39, which turns coincident with the operation of the receipt issuing mechanism. A detent 40, pivoted on a pin 4| carried on frame plate 34, normally engages the shoulder 42 of cam 39 to prevent rotation of this cam and thus prevents operation of the receipt issuing mechanism.
Means are provided whereby a deposit dropping through chute l8 starts the receipt issuing mechanism in operation to issue a single receipt and then to stop operating, and means are also provided for preventing the drawer 24 from being opened during the time the receipt issuing mechanism is operating. To these ends a baffle 43, rocking on a bracket 44 secured to partition extends into chute 18 in position to be deflected downward by a deposit dropping through the chute, and this baiile has a heel portion 45 on the opposite side of partition I! which normally engages a spring contact 46 and holds it separated from a mating contact 41, contact 45 coming against contact 41' when the baflie is rocked by a passing deposit.
Associated with detent 40, and mounted on frame plate 34, is aso1enoid48 which, when energized, will raise detent 49 and release cam 39 to rotate. When raised, detent 49 also displaces av spring contact 49 so that it will contact a terminal 59, and detent 40, when raised, will also move a resilient contact against another contact 52. The contacts 49, 59, 5|, and 52 are also mounted on the frame plate 34.
Slidably mounted in guides 53, secured to the partition 'l'l'adjacent to its upper edge, is a bolt 54 havinga lug 55 engaged from below by one end of a lever 56 pivoted on a bracket 51 secured to the top wall 22. Lever 56 has a heel portion 58 which engages, and normally holds, resilient contact 59 closed against another contact 60, contacts 59 and 50 being carried on a bracket 6| which is secured to the top 22. Associated with lever 55 is a solenoid 62 carried by bracket 51 and adapted, when energized, to rock lever 55 to raise the upper end of bolt 54 into a keeper slot 63 formed in an offset portion 3! on the lower edge of the front 35 of drawer 24. While solenoid 62 is energized, the door will be locked against being opened, but will automatically become unlocked when solenoid 62 becomes de-energized. At the same time that lever 55 moves bolt 54 upwardly, its heel portion 58 releases resilient contact 59 so as to break the contact with contact 69.
Fig. 4 shows the wiring diagram of the circuits of the receiver, and the operation will now be explained in connection therewith. The receiver is provided with a suitable pair of terminals 65 and 68 with which power lines from an outside source of current supply may be connected. A conductor 6'! connects one of these terminals to one side of the motor 37, from which a conductor 58 leads to contact 52, and the opposite contact 5| is connected by conductor 69 to the other terminal 55 so that the power circu t through the motor is closed whenever the switch comprising terminals 5| and 52 is closed, and this circuit is broken when this switch is open. Consequently,
when solenoid 48 is energized, thus raising detent 40, not only is the cam'wheel 39 released, but the switch comprising terminals 5| and 52 is closed and the motor 3'! starts rotating. Cam 39 then holds switches 49, 59 and 5!, 52 closed during a connected in series in a circuit which is closed whenever the baffle 43 is deflected by a deposit. As shown, a conductor '59 connects the lead 6'! with contact 69 and from the opposite contact 59 a conductor 1! leads to contact 41, conductor 12 leading from contact 49 to solenoid 48, from which conductor '13 connects with the opposite power lead 69. The switch comprising contacts 49 and 50 is in series with a solenoid 62 in a circuit which includes a conductor 14 leading from power line 61 to the solenoid, conductor 15 leading from the solenoid to contact 49, and conductor 16 leading from contact 59 to the opposite power line 69. As aforesaid, when detent is raised by reason of solenoid 49 being energized in consequence of the closing of the switch comprising the terminals and 47 by a deposit passing through the chute 48, the switch comprising the terminals 49 and is closed by the detent, completing the circuit through relay 52, which thereupon rocks the locking lever to lock the drawer against being opened and, at the same time, opensthe switch comprising the contacts 59 and 69, thus establishing a break in the circuit which includes solenoid 48. The reason for breaking thislatter circuit at the terminals 59 and E9 is because the bafile 43 might have a tendency to continue rocking after it has been deflected by a deposit, and cause contacts 45 and 4? to come together and separate, and the purpose of breaking this circuit at contacts 59 and 59 is to prevent any chattering and sparking that might otherwise result from such repeated closing and opening of the contacts 45 and 41.
It will be noted that the actuation, operation, and safeguarding of the operation is entirely automatic from the time a person has placed a deposit in the drawer and has closed the drawer,

Preferably all conductors which are connected with any of the parts mounted on the supporting frame 33, 3d are provided with suitable plugs removably engageable in sockets mounted in any suitable location in compartment 2! and to which other conductors of the circuit are connected, so
that, when it is desired to remove the receipt issuing mechanism, it is only necessary to open the door 35, disengage these plugs from the sockets, and remove the frame 33, 34 and all the parts thereon from compartment 2! through the aperture in the side Wall I3. This removed unit or another unit may be placed in the compartment with similar ease and convenience, since all that is necessary is to place the unit in the compartment and engage the plugs in the proper sockets to complete the circuits.
The roll Bil of paper for the receipts may be rotatably and removably carried on a spindle 8| mounted on a bracket 82 secured to the partition I! so that the roll may be renewed or removed easily and conveniently through the aperture in the side wall 53 of box 2. The front wall 15 is provided with a suitable aperture 83 through which the receipt issuing mechanism discharges the receipts and, if desired, a cup 84 may be provided in front of this aperture to catch the receipts so that they can be picked up easily and quickly by the depositor.
As a further protection, a closure plate 90 may be mounted against the under surface of the top plate 20 of chest It! to slide on track members 91 secured to this top plate, into position closing the aperture 19. This closure 96 may be held away from this opening by a finger latch 92 which is pivotedly mounted on a bracket 93 positioned within compartment 2|, and a coil spring 94 may be extended between a hook 95 on the chest and an eye 96 secured to closure Q0, adjacent to its front edge, to pull closure 90 across opening 19 whenever the closure is released from latch 92. Latch 92 is preferably provided with finger piece 93 whereby the latch may be retracted to release closure 90 to close the opening [9. Closure 9i may be returned to original position by opening the door H, reaching into chest I 0, and retracting the closure until it is automatically engaged by latch 92.
To make a deposit, the depositor merely pulls the drawer open, places the deposit therein, and lets go of the drawer, and in a very few seconds time the receipt for that deposit will be delivered into the cup 84, from winch the depositor can quickly and easily remove it. Meanwhile, until the receipt has issued, the next depositor can not open the drawer to make a deposit, and thus each issued receipt is definitely allocated to the deposit for which it has issued, and deposits can not be made in such quick succession as might result in the issuance of only a single receipt In View of the very short time that is required to make a deposit and to secure the receipt therefor, the receiver is adapted to handle efliciently separate deposits in very rapid succession, and a line of depositors may be taken care of in very rapid order.
By arranging the drawer so that it slides over the top of the compartment which houses the receipt issuing mechanism, and arranging for the issuance of the receipts at the front of this compartment, there is secured an arrangement such that the depositors may make the deposits and secure the receipts very conveniently and quickly, thus tending to conserve time. Locating the receipt issuing and control mechanism within the forward compartment disposed on top of the receiving chest not only secures the issuance of the receipt at the convenient location referred to, but also locates the paper roll for the receipts and the mechanism in a location in which it is readily and conveniently accessible for renewal of the paper or for adjustment or replacement of the mechanism. As explained hereinbefore, the paper roll for the receipts may be renewed very quickly, and also the receipt issuing mechanism may be removed and replaced easily and quickly through the aperture provided for this purpose in the side wall of the box. This structural arrangement also leaves the interior of the chest I substantially free, and makes the entire interior of the chest available to receive the deposits and prevents the deposits from coming into contact with the receipt issuing mechanism, other than the baflle 43, thus avoiding any danger of the mechanism being damaged or put out of adjustment thereby.
From the above, it will'be readily apparent that the receiver embodying this invention may be used effectively in place of clerks employed for the purpose of receiving deposits and issuing receipts therefor, and that a receiver embodying this invention is adapted to take care of deposits in very rapid succession, as well as in slow order.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and as many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof,
it is understood that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim is:
1. A receiver of the character described, including, a structure having a storage compartment, a front compartment above the storage compartment, and adapted to house receipt issuing mechanism, and a chute compartment behind said front compartment, means including a member at the upper part of the chute compartment, and movable above said front compartment, for introducing articles into the chute compartment to pass therethrough into the storage compartment, and means for locking said member against movement operable in response to operation of said receipt-issuing mechanism.
2. In a receipt issuing, article receiver of the character described, and having an opening for the introduction of articles, a closure for said opening, a latch engageable with the closure to hold the closure closed, receipt issuing mechanism and an operating circuit for said mechanism, of a locking circuit, means in and responsive to the locking circuit and engaging said latch to place and hold said latch in latching engagement with said closure when and while the looking circuit is closed, and means in the locking circuit and associated with the receipt issuing mechanism to maintain the locking circuit closed whenever the receipt issuing mechanism is operating.
3. In a receipt issuing, article receiver of the character described, and having an opening for the introduction of articles, a closure for said opening, a latch engageable with the closure to hold the closure closed, receipt issuing mechanism and an operating circuit for said mechanism, of a locking circuit, means in and. responsive to the locking circuit and engaging said latch to place and hold said latch in latching engagement with said closure when and while the locking circuit is closed, means in the locking circuit and associated with the receipt isssuing mechanism to maintain the locking circuit closed whenever the receipt issuing mechanism is operating, a control circuit controlling the operation of the operating circuit, means in the control and operating circuits and responsive to the control circuit to close the operating circuit upon the closing of the control circuit, and means in the control circuit and adapted to be actuated by an article introduced into'said opening to close the control circuit.
4. In a receipt issuing, article receiver of the character described, and having an opening for the introduction of articles, a closure for said opening, a latch engageable with the closure to hold the closure closed, receipt issuing mechanism and an operating circuit for said mechanism of a locking circuit, means in and responsive to the locking circuit andengaging said latch to place and hold said latch in latching engagement with said closure when and while the locking circuit is closed, means in the locking circuit and associated with the receipt issuing mechanism to maintain the locking circuit closed whenever the receipt issuing mechanism is operating, a control circuit controlling the operation of the operating circuit, means in the control and operating circuits and responsive to the control circuit to close the operating circuit upon the closing of the control circuit, means in the control circuit and adapted to be actuated by an article introduced into said opening to closethe control circuit, and means in said locking and control circuits to open the control circuit when the locking circuit is closed.
5. In a device for receiving articles and issuing a receipt therefor, a chute through which articles are passed, a closure for said chute, a member actuated by an article passingthrough said chute, mechanism for issuing a receipt for the article, and means actuated by said member and controlling said receipt-issuing mechanism and said closure for preventing opening of said closure during operation of said mechanism.
6. In a device for receiving articles and issuing a receipt therefor, a chute through which articles are passed, a closure for said chute, a member actuated by an article passing through said chute, mechanism actuated by said member for issuing a receipt for the article and a bolt movable in response to operation of said mechanism to prevent opening of said closure until a receipt has been issued.
7. A receiver of the character described, including, a structure having a storage compartment, a chute extending upward from'said storage compartment, a receipt-issuing mechanism positioned adjacent said chute, a drawer, mounted on, the structure, to be closed into the upper portion of the chute compartment, and to be moved therefrom to a deposit-receiving position, said drawer having means whereby, when said drawer is closed into the chute compartment, the contents of the drawer are dumped. into the chute compartment to pass therethrough into the storage compartment, means operable by an object passing through said chute to initiate operation of said receipt-issuing mechanism, and means for locking said drawer in its closed position during operation of said receiptissuing mechanism.
8. A receiver of the character described, including, a structure having a storage compartment, a drawer-receiving compartment disposed in elevated position with respect to said storage compartment, means establishing communication between said compartments, a receipt-issuing mechanism associated with said structure, a drawer mounted on said structure so as to move into and outof said drawer-receiving compartment, means for urging said drawer to closed position, means for automatically dumping the contents of said drawer into the storage compartment when the drawer is brought to closed position, means operable by an object passing from said drawer to said storage compartment to initiate operation of said receipt-issuing mechanism, and means for locking said drawer in its closed position during operation of said receiptissuing mechanism.
9. A receiver of the character described, including, a structure defining a storage compartment and a drawer-receiving compartment, a receipt-issuing mechanism associated with said structure, a drawer mounted on said structure so as to move into and out of said drawer-receiving compartment, means establishing communication between said compartments, means associated with said drawer whereby transfer of the contents of said drawer to said storage com-' partment is effected automatically when the drawer is brought to closed position, means operable by an object passing from said drawer to said storage compartment to initiate operation of said receipt-issuing mechanism, and means controlled by said receipt-issuing mechanism for locking said drawer in its closed position during operation of said receipt-issuing mechanism.
