Abstract

In the manufacture of paper, e.g. from cotton linters or wood pulp, the cellulose molecules of the fibres are cross-linked by intra-fibrous chemical bonding before the fibres are refined. Reagents used may be formaldehyde &c., or compounds having at least two functional groups, e.g. 1, 3-dichloroacetone, glyoxal, or epichlorhydrin. In an example, raw, second-cut linters were steeped in aqueous sodium hydroxide and centrifuged, heated in a digester with epichlorhydrin and purified.
