Abstract

A moulded synthetic resin article has a reinforcement consisting of a web containing weldable thermoplastic and non-weldable fibres bonded together under pressure by softening the thermoplastic fibres by heat. The thermoplastic fibres which are preferably long, e.g. 10 to 70 mm., may be made of a polyamide, cellulose acetate or triacetate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate or other polyester, or a polyvinyl compound. The non-weldable fibres may be of cotton. The web may be provided with a design or picture and impregnated with a liquid synthetic resin, and the article may be moulded by applying heat and pressure (a) to superposed layers of the impregnated web (b) to an impregnated web embedded in a layer of synthetic resin moulding powder, or (c) to a layer of synthetic resin moulding powder coated on both sides with an impregnated web, or by placing the web in a mould and injecting liquid synthetic resin thereinto. Specified synthetic resins are melamine-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, and polystyrene. An article having the appearance of porcelain may be obtained by coating the moulded article with a solution or dispersion containing about 60 to 80% by weight of synthetic resin and 5 to 15% of a -cellulose. The manufacture of ornamented bowls, plates, and cups is described.
