Abstract
871,096. Trueing grinding wheels. KEITH, R. A. March 17, 1960 [Jan. 14, 1960; Feb. 18, 1960], Nos. 1392/60 and 5766/60. Class 60. A dressing tool for an abrasive wheel 18 comprises a dressing element 6, Fig. 4, slidably mounted on and projecting from a carrier 1 having guide means 12 to coact with a workpiece rest 16. The dressing element, such as a diamond, isc cemented to a spindle 5 formed with a screw-threaded portion 7 by means of which the dressing element is adjustable relative to the carrier, the spindle is held in its adjusted position by a friction pad pressed against the spindle by a grub screw 14. The guide means consists of a bar 12 which is adjustably secured to the carrier by bolts 11 passing through slots in the carrier. In operation, the bar is pressed against the workpiece rest 16 on the machine while the dressing element is traversed across the wheel 18. After each traverse, the element is advanced a small distance by rotation of the spindle. In an alternative embodiment, the spindle 25, Figs. 7 and 8, is disposed in a bore inclined to the base of a body 22 adjustably secured by bolts 34 passing through slots 39 to an inclined portion 31 of a plate 30 having a guide bar 33 adjustably secured thereto by bolts 32. The axis of the spindle 25 carrying the diamond 26 is thus inclined to the horizontal plane to provide the diamond with a trailing action in the direction of movement of the surface of the grinding wheel and can be adjusted to a similar angle from a plane normal to the axis of the grinding wheel to provide the diamond with a trailing action as it is traversed across the wheel. The body 22 may be pivotably mounted so that it is free to automatically move to one side or the other of the plane normal to the axis of the wheel and provide a trailing action in both directions of traverse across the wheel ; a spring may provide a snap-over action for the movement of the body. The body 22 may be used without the plate 30, a guide bar being secured to the body by bolts passing through the slots 39.
