Abstract

A pressure-sensitive adhesive comprises a water-insoluble adhesive ethenoid elastomer and a curing amount of an epoxy resin, the elastomer containing radicals reactive towards the epoxy group. The elastomer may be a copolymer of an alkyl acrylate and an acrylic acid, of an alkyl acrylate and a haloalkyl vinyl ether, of a vinyl ester and an acrylic acid or of acrylonitrile, butadiene and an acrylic acid. The epoxy resin is preferably the reaction product of epichlorhydrin with a bisphenol. The adhesive may also include polyvinyl acetal, a melamine-formaldehyde resin etherified sufficiently with butanol to be solvent soluble, an oil-soluble phenolformaldehyde resin, a tackifyer such as hydrogenated rosin or hydrogenated ester gum, tricresyl phosphate, methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride, acetone, or a catalyst for the curing reaction (e.g. tris-(dimethylaminomethyl) phenol) which may be effected after coating the adhesive on a substrate, or when the adhesive is used.
