Abstract

1349871 Black acrylic enamel INSTITUT FIZICHESKOI KHIMII AKADEMII NAUK SSSR 12 March 1971 6741/71 Headings C3P C3B C3R and C3F A black acrylic enamel is produced by a method including forming a paste by dispersing carbon black in a liquid medium comprising an acrylic polymer in solution in one or more saturated monohydric alcohols either alone or in admixture with an aromatic solvent (e.g. toluene, benzene or xylene) in a weight ratio of 90 : 10 to 50 : 50, and mixing the paste with a carrier liquid comprising an acrylic polymer, an additional resin and an organic solvent. The paste may also contain a cation-active surfactant and the enamel may also contain a plasticizer. The carbon black is preferably channel black. The additional resin may be a melamine-formaldehyde, epoxy, alkyd or nitrocellulose resin. In the examples, (1) and (3) the acrylic polymer is a copolymer derived from ethylene glycol monomethacrylic ester, styrene, butyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methacrylic acid, (2) the acrylic polymer is a copolymer of methacrylamide, butylacrylate, styrene and methacrylic acid (the copolymer being reacted with formaldehyde), (4) the acrylic polymer in the paste is as in Example 1 and the acrylic polymer in the carrier liquid is as in Example 2, (5) and (6) the acrylic polymer is a copolymer of ethylene glycol monomethacrylic ester, butyl methacrylate, styrene, ethyl acrylate and dibutylaminoethyl acrylate and (7) the acrylic polymer is a copolymer of methacrylamide, styrene, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and methacrylic acid (the copolymer being reacted with formaldehyde). In the examples the additional resin is, (1), (3) and (4) a butanolized melamineformaldehyde resin, (2) a mixture of butanolized melamine-formaldehyde resin and a penta Glyptal (Glyptal is a Registered Trade Mark) alkyd resin based on C 12-16 synthetic fatty acids, (5) an epoxy resin based on diphenylolpropane and epichlorohydrin, (6) a mixture of a Glyptal alkyd resin based on dehydrated castor oil and a Glyptal alkyd resin based on C 12-16 synthetic fatty acids and (7) a mixture of a butanolized melamine formaldehyde resin, nitrocellulose (of specified viscosity) and a Glyptal alkyd resin based on C 10-12 synthetic fatty acids.
