Abstract
A stable resinous composition is prepared by opening up at least some of the epoxide groups present in a hydroxyl group-containing epoxide resin by reaction with an organic acid, an alcohol an amine or a phenolic compound and mixing the reaction product with an aldehyde-modified acrylamide interpolymer containing recurrent units of the general formula <FORM:0976554/C3/1> where R is a lower aliphatic hydrocarbon radical and R1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl radical, R1 in at least some of the said groups being lower alkyl. Preferably 25%-100% of the epoxide groups present in the epoxide resin are opened up. The epoxide resin is preferably a polyglycidyl ether of bisphenol having a molecular weight of from 200-1,000. The reaction is carried out by heating the epoxide resin with the organic acid, alcohol, cumene or phenol in solution in a solvent. The acrylamide may be copolymerized with one other acrylic monomer or a vinyl hydrocarbon and is then modified with formaldehyde. Specifications 826,653 and 842,641 are referred to.
