Abstract

An exothermic composition, which can be shaped to the form of slab or sleeve, comprises aluminium with an oxidizing agent stoichiometrically insufficient to oxidize completely all the aluminium present, and a fluoride such as Ca F2, BaF2, MgF2, AlF3 or alkali metal fluoride, or a complex fluoride, the whole composition being entirely free from alkali metal oxidizing salts. The oxidizing agents may consist of Fe2O3, MnO2, and preferably includes or consists of alkaline earth metal oxide, nitrate (e.g. Ba(NO3)2 or Ca(NO3)2 or chlorate (e.g. Ba (ClO3)2 or Ca (ClO3)2). An example of a composition in parts by weight is as follows: Al 10 to 50, Alkaline earth nitrate 2 to 15, MnO2 or Fe2O3 or both 0 to 20, fluoride or complex fluoride 0.1 to 20, filler (e.g. granulated grog) 30 to 60, binder (e.g. bentonite), about 5.
