Abstract
869,714. Travelling wave tubes. MULLARD Ltd. Dec 17, 1958, No. 40733/58. Class 39(1). A travelling-wave tube comprises a glass envelope having a portion 3 thereof -formed of precision-bore cylindrical glass tubing, a helical slow-wave structure coaxially disposed within the portion, a recessed cylindrical reference surface 4 and/or 8 coaxial with the bore of the portion formed on the exterior of the portion 3 of the envelope containing the helical structure or the portion 2 containing the electron gun, and an end cap 5 having a cylindrical reference surface 6, the end cap being firmly secured to the envelope, by the use of a jig and chuck, in such a position that the cylindrical reference surface 6 is coaxial with the cylindrical reference surface 4 or 8. A magnet assembly 11 has a cylindrical bore 16 coaxial with the magnetic field and the tube is inserted into the magnet assembly so that the cylindrical reference surface 6 on the end cap fits closely within the cylindrical bore 16. Plane reference surfaces 7 and 17 are provided on the end cap and the magnet assembly normal to the axes of the surfaces 6 and 16 respectively to locate the position of the tube relative to the magnet assembly.
