[Also in Group XL (b)] A damping member for improving the frequency response of a transducer in an ultrasonic probe comprises an inner part which contacts and forms an acoustic match with the back of the transducer, this inner part having a curvilinear taper and being surrounded by an outer part of lower acoustic impedance. The transducer 1 is of the piezo-electric type and is positioned on the surface of a test-piece 4. The inner and outer parts 6, 7 of the damping member are made respectively of an artificial resin loaded with powdered silver and of unloaded resin. The taper of the inner part is such that a tangent to any part of the parting surface 8 forms an angle of less than 75 degrees with the axis of the inner part. Under these conditions, part of the wave-energy transmitted into the inner part 6 from the back of the transducer, passes into the outer part 7 where it undergoes multiple reflection. The end 9 of the inner part may have an increased rate of taper. The end part 9 may be replaced by a conical depression 10, Fig. 3, filled with unloaded resin.
