Abstract

1514967 Piezoelectric transducers MURATA MFG CO Ltd 24 Oct 1975 [8 Nov 1974 21 Nov 1974] 43808/75 Heading H4J A piezoelectric transducer for transmitting or receiving ultrasonic waves comprises a base-plate 1 (Fig. 1) having a cylindrical supporting frame 2. One side of a piezoelectric bimorph 6 is secured to the supporting frame 2 by an elastic organic binder and a resonator 8 formed of synthetic resin is attached to the central region of the other side of the bimorph 6. The resonator 8 is a frustum of a cone, of a square pyramid (Fig. 4a, not shown) or a hexagonal pyramid (Fig. 4b, not shown). The cylindrical supporting frame 2 has a diameter equal to the diameter of a nodal circle developed at a predetermined resonant frequency of the transducer. A casing 9, preferably cylindrical, protects the bimorph 6. The resonator 8 may be of A.B.S. or polycarbonate resin. The base-plate 1 is of synthetic resin or other insulating material. The frame 2 may be separate from but attached to the baseplate 1 or the two may be integrally moulded. A metal shield plate 4 is provided. The piezoelectric bimorph 6 is square and is of ceramic. In a first alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) a piezoelectric bimorph disc has a resonator (11) in the form of a frustum of a cone, the small base portion being recessed. In a second alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the resonator (13) is in the form of a cone having an axial aperture (14). The transducer may be used in remote control of a T.V. set.
