Abstract

869,561. Vacuum furnaces. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. Jan. 26, 1960 [May 14, 1959], No. 2768/60. Class 51 (2). [Also in Groups XXII and XL (a)] Melting stock 23 is continuously advanced along a substantially horizontal path lying above a mould 16 into the open end of which a high voltage electron beam is focused, the stock being melted by said beam without interrupting the bombardment of the mould, and a region encompassing the open mould and the melting end of the stock being evacuated. A number of electron beams 36-38 are employed, one of which, 36, is directed into the mould at such an angle as to remain clear of the melt stock so as to liquefy any plastic metal tending to bridge the gap between the mould and the stock. The stock is supported on a liquid-cooled support 21 and fed through an air lock 24 by feed means 26 and may be a cast bar, or a sintered material including both powder and pieces of metal. The method is stated to remove occluded gases and volatile impurities from the metal, and the ingot 27 may be run again through the furnace for extreme purification.
