Abstract

869,221. Impregnated bearing surfaces. RUSSELL MANUFACTURING CO. June 30, 1959, No. 22492/59. Class 140. [Also in Groups IX and XXV] A bearing member shaped to fit and line a ball and socket joint comprises a multiple ply fabric woven in tubular form, the ply at one face of the fabric forming a bearing surface and having warp yarns composed of polytetrafluoroethylene, the other face of the fabric being composed of warp and weft yarns, one or both of which is or are resin bondable. As shown, Fig. 1 shows a transverse section through a tubular bearing illustrating the weave, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1. The bearing shown in Fig. 1 is woven in tubular form in two plies. The inner ply has warp yarns 10 of polytetrafluoroethylene and weft yarns 11 of cotton, nylon or rayon. The outer ply has warp yarns 12 of cotton or synthetic material and weft yarns 13 which latter may be woven as crossovers 14 binding the two plies together. The tubular fabric thus has yarns of polytetrafluoroethylene which are exposed on the inner surface and are mechanically bound into a woven fabric of cotton or other yarn which can be bonded by an impregnant to a metal surface. The tubular fabric is impregnated with a suitable resin such as a urea formaldehyde condensation product and is then formed under heat and pressure into a hemispherical shape 20 (Fig. 3). Fig. 5 shows part of a steering knuckle of an automobile, wherein a bearing member 20 (as shown in Fig. 3, is located between an inner spherical member 22 and outer spherical surfaces 23. Member 22 carries a pin 25 to be connected to an external part; member 28 pressed by spring 27 secures the parts in place.
