Abstract

A composite material, suitable for bearings, is made by doubling filaments or fibres of polyurethane elastomer with a yarn of asbestos, cotton (or other cellulosics) or glass or a mixture of these to form threads, assembling the threads together into a structure, impregnating the threads or the structure with a thermosetting synthetic resin, and curing. In the examples: (1) a multifilament polyurethane yarn is doubled with a yarn of a blend of asbestos and cotton fibres, a cloth is woven from this composite yarn as warp and asbestos yarn as weft, the cloth is impregnated with a solution of phenol-formaldehyde resin containing molybdenum disulphide, the cloth is dried, a number of pieces are superposed and hot-pressed; (2) the same cloth is impregnated with an epoxy resin syrup containing graphite powder, wound on a mandrel, placed in a split mould and moulded into a tube; (3) polyurethane monofilaments are doubled with asbestos yarns, impregnated with a cresolformaldehyde resin syrup, wound spirally in superposed layers on a mandrel coated with a silicone release agent and cured in an autoclave; and (5) a surface layer of the impregnated cloth of Example 1 with several layers of plain asbestos cloth impregnated with the same impregnant is moulded into a lining for the socket of a ball joint. Reference is also made to: impregnation with urea-formaldehyde, melamine-formaldehyde, polyester, silicone and furane resins; and lead or lead oxide powders as anti-friction additives in place of or mixed with molybdenum disulphide or graphite.
