[Also in Groups XIX and XXXII] A tensiometer includes in combination spring means 26 supported by a supporting structure (not shown) and having a spring rate which increases with increase in spring stress, material engaging means 16 mounted on the supporting structure for movement relative to the spring means when engaged by a strip or the like material 10 for stressing the spring means in dependence upon a force exerted on the material engaging means by the material, and electric signal producing means 28 for producing an electric signal dependent on the displacement of a part of the spring means or material engaging means from a predetermined datum position. Strip material 10 passing over rollers 14 and 13 between the last stand 11 of a rolling mill and a coiler 12 is engaged by a roller 16 mounted in a carriage 17 which slides in bearings 18 and is connected through a linkage 19 to a carriage 20 slidably mounted in bearings 22 and carrying a roller 21 which engages a spring 23 secured rigidly at one end by a clamp 24 to a supporting member 26. The surface 27 of the latter is so profiled that displacement of the spring 23 from the zero position 23a is proportional to the logarithm of the tension in the strip material 10. Displacement of the spring 23 is measured by a synchro generator 28 having coupled to its rotor shaft an arm 29 carrying a roller 30 which is maintained in contact with the spring 23 by a bias spring 31. Input terminals 32 to the rotor winding of the generator 28 are connected to an A.C. source 33 and an output signal obtained from terminals 34 connected to the stator winding is proportional to the displacement 0 of the rotor and therefore to the log. of the strip tension. Various possible connections of the stator windings of the generator 28 are described (Figs. 2 to 7, not shown), together with circuits for obtaining a D.C. output signal dependent on the deviation of the strip tension from a pre-set value determined by the circuit constants. In alternative arrangements the lever arm 29 is operated directly by the linkage 19 or (Fig. 8, not shown) bears on a roller mounted on the spring 23.
