Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula: <FORM:0868556/IV (b)/1> (wherein R1 and R2 represent C2-4 alkyl radicals and R3 represents a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic acyl radical containing at most 4 carbon atoms; the preparation thereof by (a) reducing an a -ketobutyric acid dialkylamide and, if desired, acylating the product or (b) hydrolysing an a -halobutyric acid dialkylamide and, if desired, acylating the product, or (c) reacting an a -hydroxybutyric acid or a functional derivative thereof, whose hydroxy group may be protected by a radical easily split off (e.g. by acylation), with a dialkylamine and, if desired, eliminating the protecting radical; and pharmaceutical preparations containing the products, which have analeptic properties. The a -hydroxybutyric acid dialkylamides can also be made by the action of nitrous acid on the corresponding a -amino compounds. A condensation product of a -hydroxybutric acid and acetone having the formula: <FORM:0868556/IV (b)/2> is described for use as a starting material in process (c).
