Abstract

868,340. Washing-machines. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. June 16, 1959 [June 27, 1958], No. 20594/59. Class 138 (2). [Also in Groups XIII and XXXVII] A washing and spin-drying machine having a reciprocable agitator and a spinnable tub, both driven by a single induction motor, has means for controlling the rates of agitation and spin. The agitator control-means is operative, when the motor is driving the agitator, to adjust the impedance of the motor supply leads to a preselected value. Agitator control (Fig. 2).-As the motor 42 accelerates, a centrifugal device 44 operates to cut out a start winding 46 and energize a coil 64. Coil 64 operates switches 68, 70 to connect the motor to the output contacts 76, 78 of a variable inductor 38. If the motor speed is reduced (e.g. due to blockage in the tub) the centrifugal device 44 re-establishes the circuit shown in Fig. 2 to increase the motor torque until its speed increases again. In this example the motor is reversed for spin drying. Spin control (Fig. 5).-For high-speed spin a switch 150 is moved on to a contact H to connect the motor 126 to the supply L1, L2. For low-speed spin the motor is alternately energized and de-energized by means of a hot wire switch 136 comprising a resistor 170, hot wire 168 and two switch blades 164, 166 on a spring support 186. As the wire 168 becomes hot and therefore longer the support 186 moves the blade 164 to cut out the resistor 170 and thereby reduce the motor current. Shortly afterwards the wire 168 becomes even longer and the support 186 moves the blade 166 to disconnect the motor. The motor slows down and the hot wire contracts until the blade 166 recloses the circuit to re-energize the motor and repeat the process. The resistor 170 may be variable and determines the speed at which the motor current is interrupted and therefore the average motor speed for low-speed spin-drying. In Fig. 9 (not shown) the two control circuits of Figs. 2 and 5 are combined.
