Abstract

867,834. Charging with static electricity. MASON & SONS Ltd., E. N. Aug. 14, 1957 [Aug. 17, 1956], No. 25267/56. Class 35. [Also in Group XXXVI] A photo-sensitive layer on a carrier is electrostatically charged for printing and copying by applying a positive charge to one side and a negative charge to the other, these charges being derived from electronic generators. The charging units consist of wires 20 supported in spring mounts 21 and enclosed in a shield having slots 22 for the carrier. The wires may be of stainless steel or platinum-clad molybdenum of from 0.001 inch to 0.003 inch but tungsten wires 0.002 inch diameter are preferred. They may be spaced 0.875 inch to 1.25 inch from the carrier and have a brass shield 0.5 inch from their plane and between the wires. The negative charging unit, which is on the active side of the carrier is at a greater potential than the positive unit facing the back of the paper and which serves mainly to neutralize the negative charge on the paper. The positive charging potential may be 6-9 k.v. D.C. Both charges are derived from electronic oscillators, preferably operating at about 18 kc/s. and feeding a diode rectifier.
