Abstract

867,757. Detecting water in hydrocarbons. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Nov. 11, 1959 [Dec. 2, 1958], No. 38229/59. Class 97(3) Dispersed water in hydrocarbons such as aviation, fuels, is detected by contacting a sample of hydrocarbon with a minor amount of a mixture of finely divided anhydrous sodium salt of o-cresolsulfonphthalein and finely divided anhydrous barium carbonate and noting the change in colour from white or grey to pink or red. The amount of dispersed water present may be determined by comparison with the colour change produced in samples containing known quantities of dispersed water. There may be 25 to 500, for instance 50 to 250, parts by weight of the barium carbonate for each part of the sodium salt, and 0.1 to 5 grams, preferably 0.25 to 1 gram, of the mixture may be used for each 100 millilitres of oil.
